In 1985, 18 people met in the Chapel of Young Harris College to consider founding a Presbyterian congregation to serve Towns and Union Counties. As an expression of faith, several families purchased property on the Young Harris Highway. On October 21, 1986, Presbytery authorized the creation of Mountain Presbyterian Church and approved the purchase of land for the church. The congregation moved to its current location in 1988.
The Reverend K. Travis Adams began his ministry here in March, 1990. As the congregation grew, the original building was expanded and made fully handicap accessible.
As programs to serve our church family were added, we also began to reach out to the surrounding communities and the world. Members were instrumental in founding Support in Abusive Family Emergencies (S.A.F.E.) and are still actively involved in this organization. Mountain Presbyterian Church participates in the Union-Towns County ecumenical Holy Week Services and the Ministerial Alliance.
We have opened our doors for meetings to community organizations such as AA and Al-Anon, S.A.F.E., Domestic Violence Task Force, Misty Mountain Quilters Guild, and many others. Our mission giving within our denomination and in the community has grown significantly over the years.
There is still much to be done. As we work together in this mountain community, may God continue to bless us, encourage us, and guide us as we seek to grow in mission and ministry to our church, our community and the world.
“…if you have faith the size of a mustard seed…
nothing will be impossible for you.”
Matthew 13:32
